BlackRock's push into crypto has been expeditious, but it may be hitting the brakes after bitcoin and ether. But Robert Mitchnick, BlackRock's head of digital assets, shut that possibility down at the Bitcoin Investor Day conference last week. He pointed out that bitcoin and ether make up the majority of the crypto market cap – bitcoin at 52% and ether at 16%, according to CoinMarketCap. In addition to bitcoin and ether ETFs, BlackRock is also exploring digital assets through tokenization efforts. "And we have clients who are comfortable and fluent on blockchain infrastructure, interacting with digital assets.

But what could be new this time around is a solution to the problem, according to Grayscale CEO Michael Sonnenshein. It's yet another issue that could ultimately be solved by the blockchain, according to Sonnenshein. It only makes sense for the blockchain to be integrated in generative AI technologies going forward, according to Sonnenshein. That symbiotic relationship should ultimately benefit creators and open the door to transparent compensation, according to Sonnenshein.

DAVOS, Switzerland — Bitcoin does nothing, JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon said Wednesday on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum. "This is the last time I'm talking about this with CNBC, so help me god," Dimon said. "I defend your right to do bitcoin," Dimon added, saying, "I don't want to tell you what to do. When asked what he made of Larry Fink changing his view on bitcoin as BlackRock jumped into the spot ETF business, Dimon said, "I don't care. "I don't know what he would say about blockchain versus currencies that do something versus bitcoin that does nothing," Dimon added.

IOTA digital tokens will fund the investment. The foundation will be seeded with over $100 million in IOTA tokens, to be vested over the next four years, Schiener said. IOTA tokens on Tuesday traded at about $0.17, with a market capitalization of roughly $524 million, Coinmarketcap.com showed. The funds will be used to develop the IOTA network and accelerate its growth, Schiener said. IOTA will also start "tokenizing" assets, he said, a process in which ownership rights in land or buildings are represented as digital tokens and stored on a blockchain.

Tokenizing real-world assets on a blockchain is one of the buzziest topics of the year, and this time it isn't just coming from financial incumbents like Citi, JPMorgan and Northern Trust, it's coming from crypto native players, too. As the world of crypto becomes more connected to the broader financial market, the appetite for tokenizing real-world assets, or RWA, is coming from smaller participants as well. Kraken Ventures' Stuti Pandey said since tokenization's last hype cycle, RWAs have benefited from changes in economics, technology and credibility. "Over the past few years, interest rates have been very depressed and that has favored very high growth, high risk assets," she said. Now that rates are down, it's actually these real-world assets that have interesting yield."

Citi is upgrading some of its services for institutional clients using blockchain technology. The banking giant introduced Citi Token Services on Monday, which will tokenize clients' deposits so they can be sent anywhere in the world instantly. The bank is also now using smart contracts to automate the trade process. Citi tested the smart contract capability with shipping and logistics giant Maersk, a client of the bank. While crypto remains in regulatory limbo and prices have been almost stagnant this year, renewed excitement about tokenizing real-world assets using blockchain technology has emerged as one of the hottest topics of the year.

Banking titans such as JPMorgan and Citi want to supercharge Wall Street by borrowing a tool from crypto — tokenizing assets on a blockchain. The firm projects $5 trillion in assets could be tokenized on blockchains over the next five years. It takes time to transfer ownership of an asset on Wall Street. U.S. agencies like the Securities and Exchange Commission are cracking down on crypto companies. Watch the video above to learn why big banks are spending millions on tokenization.

If financial incumbents want to be part of the modernization of financial markets, they need to adopt blockchains, according to Bernstein. Beyond tradeable assets like bitcoin, however, there's an opportunity over the next five years for financial firms in tokenizing real-world assets on blockchains, the firm said in a note this week. "Tokenization, we believe, will transform financial markets over the next decade," analyst Gautam Chhugani said in the Tuesday note. "We forecast ~$5 trillion of real-world financial assets will be tokenized on blockchains over the next 5 years." There is also a big opportunity for new business verticals in custody, trading, trade finance and enterprise consulting, Chhugani said.

Despite a tumultuous year for cryptocurrencies and their trading platforms, there remains a bright spot in the space: bitcoin futures ETFs. The ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF (BITO) hit a trading record on Nov. 8, surpassing its previous record by 64%. And volume for ProShares Short Bitcoin Strategy ETF (BITI) also on Nov. 8 spiked 366% higher than any day since its launch, according to ProShares. Hyman said the lack of segregation among bitcoin exchanges underlines the need for maturation. "You hold enough cash, such that the return should be approximately spot bitcoin.
Edward Tian | Moment | Getty ImagesSingapore still wants to be a hub for digital assets, but not one for speculating on cryptocurrencies, said Ravi Menon, managing director of central bank the Monetary of Singapore. "If a crypto hub is about experimenting with programmable money, applying digital assets for use cases or tokenizing financial assets to increase efficiency and reduce risk in financial transactions, yes, we want to be a crypto hub," said Menon in his opening address at the Singapore Fintech Festival 2022 on Thursday. "But if it is about trading and speculating in cryptocurrencies, that is not the kind of crypto hub we want to be," said Menon. Singapore has ambitions to become a global crypto hub, but has been cracking down on the industry after many retail investors lost their life savings to crypto trading. We believe Project Guardian can help pave the way for the next evolution of financial markets in Singapore," said Menon.
